What's new at RCHS...
Band Performs as Special Guest Artists

The Rockcastle County High School Concert Band were recently chosen as guest performers by the Central Kentucky Concert Band, under the direction of Dr. Peter LaRue. The band performed in concert with the group on the campus of Transylvania University on December 11th in Lexington. The combined bands performed Steven Schwartz's "Selections From The Musical Wicked" as well as composer Jay Althouse's "Waltzing Wicked Witches" as part of the CKCB's "Double Double Toil and Trouble" Concert. The Central Kentucky Concert Band is a community band sponsored by various organizations including the Lexington Arts Council. In 2008, the band began inviting select high school programs to perform on their December concert in order to reach out to young musicians in an effort to teach them the value and importance of lifelong music making. The RCHS Band members spend 3 days in rehearsal with the group and were introduced to various musicians in the group and spent one on one time in music instruction with them. Dr. Peter Larue, director of CKCB as well as band director at Georgetown University found the RCHS students "a joy and a delight to work with during this venture. The RCHS Band helped to add a fine addition to the concert program with their musicianship and professionalism." RCHS Band director, Greg Daugherty, who plays tuba with the CKCB personnel was asked to conduct the two joint pieces and found it to be "an educational and moving experience for myself and the students."

       RockChalk 2011

After several rain delays, the high school students went outside to express their creativity with some graffiti. No, don’t worry, it wasn’t on the side of a building or in an over pass. It was done appropriately on the side walks at the front entrance of the high school. The weather gave them a perfect day to draw lots of images, both realistic, cartoon, and game art inspired. The students enjoyed the attention that was given to them from on lookers. Plans for RockChalk 2012 are already underway.

FFA Travels to Louisville for the KY State Fair

By: Chapter Reporter, Sarah Pigg

“Winning takes talent. To repeat takes character.”
(John Wooden)

Each year, thousands of people travel to the Kentucky State Fair. Many go for the thrill of the rides, mouth-watering deep-fried Oreos, and the infamous concerts. But when our FFA members load up the buses, they’re going to WIN.

During the course of the week, several students participated in various competitions.

The Small Engines Team placed 1st overall with Chase McGuire as the state high individual. Other team members included Ethan Durham (4th high individual), John Lawson (10th high individual), and Nathan Bullock (21st high individual). The team has placed 1st in the contest six times over the past seven years. Besides winning the state title, each member of the team was presented with a $10,000 scholarship to Ohio Technical College.

Congratulations to each member! We’re so proud of you!
