The Rockcastle County School District has developed a policy and services regarding students who are English Language Learners/ELL. Currently, the district has 2 students who qualify for these services.

When a student enrolls for the first time in any Rockcastle County school, a questionnaire is completed regarding the language spoken by the child and in the home. If answers to the questionnaire show a need, the WIDA ACCESS (W-APT) evaluation is given to the student. This test assesses four domains—listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

Once a student is identified as an English Language Learner, a Program Services Plan/PSP is developed and shared with parents. This plan will be designed to meet the English language and academic needs of the student and will address instructional and testing accommodations.

All identified English Language Learners will take the ACCESS in January of each year. The ACCESS is an assessment which measures progress in English language acquisition. These scores provide information for teachers and resource teachers that may lead to changes in the student’s Program Services Plan. The student may exit the program once the ACCESS scores meet the current English language acquisition standard.

If you have any questions regarding this program or concerns that your child may need these services, please contact the coordinator at the number listed above.
