Students from Rockcastle County High School came together this week for an immersive and collaborative cultural event that highlighted the richness of Appalachian heritage. The event brought together Ms. Erin Grace’s Education Pathway, Mr. Cliff Mullins’ Culinary Pathway, and Ms. Holly Robinson’s Appalachian Studies class for a traditional Appalachian luncheon filled with learning, discussion, and celebration.

The Culinary students, under the guidance of Mr. Mullins, prepared and served a meal rooted in Appalachian tradition. As students gathered for the luncheon, Makaylee McNally and Kendra Barnes from Ms. Grace’s class presented reflections inspired by Jesse Stuart’s The Thread That Runs So True, which served as a central text for both the Education and Appalachian Studies classes. The book sparked meaningful conversations about the region’s culture and the role of education in shaping community identity.

Adding to the day’s authenticity, Mr. Mullins shared insights into Appalachian foodways while preparing the meal, and Mr. Caleb Teague captivated students with a live performance of Appalachian Bluegrass music, showcasing his skills on the mandolin, guitar, and banjo. His musical presentation brought the history and heart of the mountains to life.
