Students in Ms. Heather Shepherd’s 1st grade class at Mount Vernon Elementary School (MVES) had a morning full of excitement and pride as they celebrated becoming published authors.
The class recently completed a collaborative book titled “The Best Part of Me,” which features a unique section written by each student. In their individual entries, students shared what they believe is the best part of their body and why—whether it’s their legs that help them walk and run or their arms that allow them to play and explore. Each page highlights the students’ creativity through their own handwritten stories and hand-colored illustrations.
To mark this special accomplishment, the class held an Author Award Ceremony where each student received recognition for their work as a published author. The event also gave students their first opportunity to see the completed book, making the moment even more meaningful.
During the celebration, students proudly read their sections aloud to their classmates, showcasing their writing and building confidence as young authors. As a lasting tribute, the class dedicated a copy of their book to Ms. Susan, the school librarian, ensuring that MVES students for years to come will have the opportunity to check out and enjoy the book.
This project not only celebrated student voice and creativity but also highlighted the importance of literacy, self-expression, and confidence—key steps in growing Rocket Learners into Rocket Leaders.
