Through their voluntary participation in KEDC Grants programs, Rockcastle County Teacher Leaders dedicate significant time beyond their regular school responsibilities to deepen their content knowledge, strengthen their instructional practices, and bring new learning experiences back to their students.

Participation in these grant programs is a commitment. Throughout each grant year, Teacher Leaders must complete at least 40 hours of professional learning to become eligible for summer immersion experiences. Much of this work takes place beyond the regular school day, including evenings, weekends, and summer months.

The summer immersions are fully funded through KEDC Grants and are intentionally designed as field-based professional learning experiences—not simply as travel opportunities. Each destination is selected for its historical and educational significance, giving educators the opportunity to experience firsthand the places, people, and events that helped shape our nation's history.

During these immersions, Rockcastle County educators visit museums, historic landmarks, monuments, battlefields, archives, and other nationally significant sites. They engage in place-based learning that provides historical context and perspectives that are difficult to replicate through a textbook, computer screen, or traditional professional learning session.

For many educators, these experiences also provide access to places and resources they may never otherwise have the opportunity to experience on their own.

But the learning doesn't stay at the destination.

Rockcastle County Teacher Leaders return home with deeper content knowledge, firsthand experiences, new instructional resources, and stories that help make history more meaningful for their students. What an educator experiences at a historic site, sees in a museum, or learns from a primary source can ultimately become part of a lesson that reaches students year after year.

These opportunities represent an investment in educators who have chosen to go above and beyond—giving their time after school, on weekends, and during the summer to continue learning and growing professionally.

Their participation reflects a commitment not only to their own professional growth, but also to bringing richer, more authentic learning experiences back to the students in their classrooms.
