As Rockcastle County prepares to celebrate Retired Teachers’ Appreciation Week, October 18–24, 2026, the community is recognizing the lasting impact of educators who have dedicated their careers to shaping the lives of students.

Rockcastle County Judge Executive Howell Holbrook Jr. recently joined members of the Rockcastle Retired Teachers Association to sign a resolution officially proclaiming October 18–24 as Retired Teachers’ Appreciation Week. Established by the Kentucky General Assembly in 2014, this annual recognition honors the service, dedication, and contributions of retired educators throughout the Commonwealth.

Rockcastle County is home to 234 retired teachers, with an average of 30 years of teaching experience each. Together, these educators represent more than 7,000 combined years of service to Rockcastle County Schools and generations of Rocket Learners.

In addition to celebrating retired educators, the Rockcastle Retired Teachers Association continues to support educational opportunities for students through initiatives such as the 2026–2027 AARP Kentucky Grandparent Essay Contest, presented in partnership with AARP Kentucky and the Kentucky Retired Teachers Association (KRTA).

The annual contest invites fifth-grade students across Kentucky to participate by writing an essay titled “Why My Grandparent Should Be the AARP Kentucky Grandparent of the Year.” Through this opportunity, students can recognize the love, guidance, and positive influence grandparents provide in their lives.

The contest also raises awareness of the more than 93,000 children in Kentucky who are being raised by or living in households headed by grandparents, highlighting the important role grandparents play in supporting children and families.

Fifth-grade teachers are encouraged to incorporate the contest into their fall lesson plans. Students may submit handwritten or digitally typed essays, with school-level submissions due December 15, 2026.

Contest guidelines, entry forms, and additional information are available on the AARP Kentucky Grandparent Essay Contest website.

Rockcastle County Schools extends its appreciation to the retired educators who have helped build a strong foundation for generations of students. Their commitment to education continues to make a difference in our schools, families, and community.
